The Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited (CNML) has taken steps to improve the telecommunication network in its operational areas in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The company has constructed telecommunication towers for its mining project, which has enabled telecommunication network companies to install their microwave devices and provide quality voice and data services to the people in the area.

Access to a telecommunication network was a major challenge for over 2,600 people in communities such as Digaare, Tolla, Bapeela, New Accra site, and Biung, but they can now connect to their relations worldwide via the Vodafone network, both voice and data services.

“I am excited to announce that following the recent completion of the telecommunication towers for the Namdini Project, Vodafone has installed their microwave devices on our towers to bring their network coverage to the area. Over 2,800 people in communities such as Digaare, Tolla, Bapeela, New Accra site, and Biung can now heave a sigh of relief as they can now connect to their relations worldwide via the Vodafone network, both voice and data services. I am informed that with this service, people can have Closed User Groups which enable members to enjoy free calls within their circles.”

The Vice President of Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd, Feng Baoli, made this revelation at the Digaare community, one of the newly established communities by the large-scale mining company, after supporting students with about 14,636 exercise books.

According to Mr. Baoli, the company is also collaborating with MTN Ghana to move to the area and improve their network coverage in these communities.

“Very soon, we will have MTN also come in to improve their network coverage for all our communities around the project.”

Cardinal Namdini Mining Ltd stated its full commitment to supporting the district, especially communities within its operational areas, even though the company is still in the construction stage.

Large-scale mining by Cardinal Namdini will create jobs – Jinapor

The discovery of gold in large quantity in some parts of the Upper East Region will serve as a catalyst for the development of the region.

This is according to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor.

Mr. Jinapor was optimistic that the yet-to-be explored gold in large quantity by Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited in the Talensi district will serve as a game changer in creating jobs and improving the socioeconomic development of the Upper East region and Ghana as a whole.

“On 6th October last year, as part of my working tour to the Upper East Region, I visited the field office of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited to acquaint myself with the operations of the company and assess the impact of their operations of host companies, particularly Biung and Accra. I was pleased to learn that after several years of exploration, large-scale gold mining activities were going to commence in the Upper East Region. My excitement was as the result of the potential of jobs, this mining operation is going to create jobs for the people of the Upper East Region, its impact on the socioeconomic development of the area and the country at large. I was happy to learn that, even before the first gold is poured, Cardinal Namdini has already factored local content in its employment policy including senior management like the company’s secretary and head of legal who hails from the Upper East Region”

The minister said this during the resettlement project for some residents of the Biung and Accra communities to pave way for a kick-start of large-scale gold mining.

Mr. Jinapor said government was committed to ensuring that companies operate in line with all minerals and mining acts to improve the lives of their operational areas.

Both resettled communities were provided with residential places fitted with kitchens and washrooms, electric power, improved water supply, and sanitation, improved community access roads and social services including schools, places of worship, and healthcare facilities teachers and nurses’ quarters among others.

Chief Executive Officer of Cardinal Namdini, Luis Santana said the ongoing partnership between the company and its local stakeholders has also culminated in the construction of a 25km public road from Balungu to the mine at a cost of US$7 Million.

“The completion of the resettlement project paves way for the construction of the Namdini Gold Project, with an estimated gold production of over 1 million oz Au during the first 3 years of operation and an average of 278k oz Au during its 15-year mine life. We are, therefore, encouraging our supportive local stakeholders to continue with their immeasurable support to complete the other phases of the project”, he added.

The CEO assured the government that Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited “will uphold the principles of regulatory compliance, transparency, world-class standard, and will be a responsible developer” in line with government’s quest to promote the socioeconomic development of the northern part of Ghana.

The paramount chief of the Talensi Traditional Area, Tongraan Kugbilsong Nanlebegtang applauded the company for the development it is bringing to the area.

He entreated the beneficiary communities to take good care of the facilities and coexist with the mining company.

The chief of Baare who represented the Tongraan entreated the mining company to consider engaging the youth of the Upper East Region in its operations.

Mining company resettles 1000 inhabitants in Talensi District

A population of about 1, 000 inhabitants in mining communities in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region are being resettled to pave way for large-scale gold mining.

Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Shandong Gold, a Chinese mining firm that touts itself as being one of the best ten mining companies in the world has provided shelter for the affected inhabitants at its concession.

The resettlement site is located at the operational sites of the company – Accra, and Biung.

Some of the affected residents are natives of communities such as Datuko, Biung, Bapela, Gigaare, Tolaa, and Sheega. Some of the beneficiaries are also migrant miners from different parts of the country.

The facilities provided by Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited at both the Biung and Accra sites include a school, teachers’ quarters, CHPS compound, nurses’ quarters, church, mosque, and library facility.

Aside the concrete residential structures roofed with modern zinc, the twin communities that were initially not connected to the national grid, have access to electricity and potable drinking water.

Emmanuel Kofi Adusei, Community and Social Responsibility Manager of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited who disclosed this added that some of the affected miners who had occupied the area before his outfit took over the sites, cast doubts about the company’s resettlement package.

“If we were to build the whole thing it would have been a huge community but some people wanted to take their money and go to their hometown. Some didn’t believe that we could do this, they thought we were just joking. It is understandable because they haven’t seen this before. And more so, how could you build a whole community when you are not even mining? So, some of them were doubtful and we entered into negotiation and signed an agreement as to what we are going to provide. Unfortunately, some people thought we were joking so they took their monies and misused the monies.”

The CSR manager for Cardinal Namdini Limited disclosed this while speaking to the Upper East Regional executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).

“We’ve almost done with the two resettlement projects. Accra site, they’ve moved to their new homes. Biung is done, hoping that by this weekend, they will also move to their new homes so that we will start earthworks towards the construction of our projects”, he added.

Some of the beneficiaries he said, were engaged in illegal gold mining otherwise known as galamsey.

Their activities according to Mr. Adusei were causing havoc to the environment through the destruction of forest cover, and the destruction of soil through the introduction of toxic waste such as mercury.

But Mr. Adusei said Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited has a livelihood support programme for the resettled miners so that they will not go back to do what the country’s laws frown upon – galamsey.

“100 of them, from both sites [Accra and Biung] want to go back into farming. So, we gave everybody, cutlasses, hoes, wellington boots, spraying machines, pesticides, fertilizers, maize, beans, and millet and we ploughed the lands for them. Again, for vulnerable households, we are giving them food rations monthly with some monies. We are also providing counselling services and health workers attend to their health needs. We are also providing alternative livelihood support for them which is livestock. After they were resettled, we gave every household Ghc1,000.”

In a month, Mr. Adusei said Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited hopes to support the capacity-building service of some miners in the Talensi district by enrolling them at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute.

After the resettlement process, the construction of the company’s project which comprises offices, camp accommodation, and plants will pave way for actual gold mining, possibly in the next two years.
